Oh, and for players it quenches their insatiable thirst to take on the very best competition. For instance, Henrik Stenson, who embraced his trophy after blitzing the field to win in 2009 and cited the fire that burned within.

“It just seems to bring out the best in me when I’m playing against the best players,” said the 33-year-old ball-striking machine from Sweden.

Clearly, Stenson delivered his best in an unforgettable final round that left his competitors in awe. Ian Poulter started the final round tied with Stenson at 6-under and felt his 2-under 70 was quality stuff, good enough to win.

“But I didn’t expect someone to go out there and shoot 66,” said Poulter.

Few have risen to the occasion at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass quite like the Swede did that day. He made six birdies and recorded the only bogey-free fourth round, matched the low score of the day, and made a five-stroke deficit evaporate. Of course, Alex Cejka, who led at 11-under through 54, kicked open the door by shooting 79, but it was Stenson’s superb round that left an indelible memory.
