Nothing Jason Day had done before at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass (five starts, three missed cuts) got you thinking that he would steamroll the field at THE PLAYERS Championship 2016.

Then again, everything he had done recently (two wins) offered indicators that the Aussie just might make a statement.

In this case, current form trumped past history, and in a massive way.

“That’s Tiger-esque, that kind of run,” said Adam Scott after watching his countryman set a 36-hole scoring record (15 under) and coast to victory in the PGA TOUR’s showcase championship.

Scott offered his admiration for Day’s third win in 10 weeks and seventh triumph in 17 starts dating back to the end of 2014-15. Invoking the name Tiger Woods was fitting, because Day became the first player ranked No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking to win THE PLAYERS since Woods, who did it in 2013 and 2001.

Day had started with a record-tying 63, added a 66, and went 73-71 on the weekend for 15-under 273 to win by four over Kevin Chappell. It was simple, said his opponents: Day is ferocious off the tee, relentless with his irons, and has arguably the best short game going.

“It’s no coincidence he’s No. 1 in the world,” said Justin Thomas.

The only one not joining in the praise? Day himself. It was his 10th career win and the Aussie isn’t impressed. “I want more than 10. I look at that and that isn’t a lot.”
