There had been so many good stretches of play for Nick Price in the mid-to-late 1980s that didn’t result in victories that he naturally grew restless.

When Price scratched out a win in 1991 and two more in 1992, he felt relieved. But when he put on a clinic at THE PLAYERS Championship 1993, the Zimbabwean knew he had arrived.

He beat the deepest field in the richest PGA TOUR tournament of the year.

“I couldn’t have played any better,” Price said after turning in trips of 64-68-72-67 for a tournament-record 18-under 270 and five-stroke win over Bernhard Langer. “I just felt so good out there.”

He never looked any better than at the par-4 fourth in the final round. Having missed a rare fairway, Price from a deep grass bunker lofted a sand wedge that just cleared water that fronts the green and nestled within 4 feet.

“Probably the greatest shot of my life.”

Impressive, given that these were the days of being No. 1 in the world for Price. He would win three more times in 1993 and six times in 1994. He led the money list and was Player of the Year both seasons.

Nowhere did his exquisite ball-striking shine more than at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass where he had one win and eight other top 10s.

Price always felt this win at THE PLAYERS established him. “My game stood up to everything that was thrown at it,” he said.
